SINGAPORE, July 6 — Mandopop singer Wang Leehom suffered a heavy fall during his concert in Chengdu, China on July 4, leaving him with injuries that required 39 stitches, according to The Straits Times.

The 50-year-old was performing on the Chengdu leg of his “The Best Place II” tour, with three shows scheduled from July 3 to 5 at Dong’an Lake Sports Park main stadium, which has a capacity of up to 40,000 spectators.

Videos circulating on social media showed Wang tripping over a safety harness as he moved from a platform onto a staircase during the opening of the July 4 show.

He had earlier been lowered onto the stage using the same harness system.

He fell heavily onstage, with the left side of his face striking the ground.

Crew members rushed to assist him, but Wang quickly got back on his feet and continued performing, including the song Heaven And Earth Dragon (2021).

Later, in a social media post, Wang recounted the incident, saying his foot became caught in a cable, causing him to fall and hit the edge of the metal stage.

He said the impact injured his left ear, where he was wearing a hard in-ear monitor, and caused damage that led to significant bleeding.

Wang said he continued the performance using only his right ear monitor, adding that “the show must go on” despite the injury.

He later went to hospital, where medical staff treated him with 27 stitches to his ear and 12 stitches to his face.

A CT scan reportedly showed no damage to his brain or skull.

He described the bleeding as alarming but said the injury was not as severe as it initially appeared, thanking fans for their concern and support.

His management agency later said preliminary findings suggested the accident was caused by improper handling of the wire harness system, triggering an internal review into safety procedures at the concert.

The agency added that Wang’s remaining Chengdu performance would proceed as scheduled, subject to medical clearance.
