Crypto.com and Fanatics Collectibles are introducing an innovative blockchain-based fan engagement initiative tied to the 2026 UEFA Champions League Final in Budapest. The collaboration combines a traditional match-day ceremony with tokenized digital ownership, creating what the companies described as a first-of-its-kind sponsorship activation within global sports.

The initiative centers on the official Crypto.com Match Coin that will be used by the referee during the opening coin toss at the UEFA Champions League Final at Puskás Aréna. Following the match, the physical coin will reportedly be embedded into a unique premium Topps Now Relic trading card that only one fan will be able to obtain through a random selection process.

Topps plans to launch a corresponding base trading card on its official platform shortly after the final. One purchaser will then be randomly selected to receive the exclusive Relic card containing the authenticated match coin.

Blockchain Authentication Expands Fan Utility

The physical match coin will also be authenticated on the Cronos blockchain as a digital collectible. Beyond serving as a collectible item, the tokenized asset is expected to function as an access pass for the 2026-2027 football season.

The tokenized Match Coin will provide the winning fan with authenticated blockchain ownership alongside exclusive UEFA-related experiences, including Super Cup Final tickets and club match access.

The benefits tied to the digital collectible are expected to include tickets to the UEFA Super Cup Final, league phase admission to all eight matches of a selected club, and the opportunity to personally deliver the official Match Coin during that club’s first home fixture of the season.

Prior to the final, UEFA ambassador Ashley Cole unveiled the Match Coin at the stadium after it was transported to the venue by drone, emphasizing the growing focus on spectacle and immersive fan engagement throughout the season. After being used during the opening toss, the coin will reportedly be sent to Topps printing facilities in Munich, where it will be permanently sealed inside the one-of-one trading card.

Crypto.com’s Global Head of Sponsorships, Nicholas Christ, explained that the activation was intended to merge a historic football tradition with modern fan culture and collectible ownership. He also indicated that tokenizing the coin would help connect traditional trading card collectors with NFT enthusiasts while demonstrating how real-world tokenization could evolve into blockchain-based investment assets.

Expanding the Match Coin Campaign

The Budapest activation represents the culmination of Crypto.com’s broader Match Coin campaign, which has reportedly covered 189 UEFA Champions League matches throughout the season. Selected fans participating in earlier activations were able to obtain digital Match Coin collectibles tied to prize draws and VIP experiences.

The wider Champions Collection has also distributed limited silver and gold digital coins that granted rewards such as premium tickets and hospitality access. Certain gold editions were reportedly issued in extremely limited quantities, with some ranging between 16 and 72 units depending on the tournament phase.

Crypto.com and UEFA are leveraging blockchain scarcity and exclusive rewards to deepen fan engagement across one of the world’s most watched football competitions.

UEFA previously signed Crypto.com as the first exclusive global cryptocurrency platform partner for the Champions League’s 2024-2027 commercial cycle. The agreement gave the company long-term opportunities to experiment with digital collectibles and blockchain-based fan experiences surrounding European football.

Growing Trend of Tokenized Sports Collectibles

The partnership also aligns with Crypto.com’s broader Cronos ecosystem strategy, which includes investment initiatives and blockchain-focused financial products. Industry data shows that cryptocurrency companies have collectively signed dozens of football sponsorship agreements since 2021, spending hundreds of millions of dollars across sports partnerships.

Crypto.com has already established sponsorships with major football organizations and clubs, while other crypto exchanges such as Binance and WhiteBIT have introduced NFT campaigns and football-related promotional deals of their own.

The UEFA Final Relic card pushes tokenized sports collectibles further by linking a physically used match artifact with verifiable blockchain ownership and premium collector exclusivity.

The latest initiative highlights how sports organizations and blockchain companies are increasingly integrating digital ownership, scarcity models, and live-event memorabilia into broader fan engagement strategies. If successful, the model could provide UEFA and Crypto.com with a repeatable framework for future tournaments and tokenized sports collectibles tied to major football events.
