Singapore PM Lawrence Wong champions diversity in PAP ranks at anniversary conference

SINGAPORE, July 5 — Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the People’s Action Party (PAP) is looking to bring in Singaporeans with a wider range of views and experiences, stressing that the party does not expect everyone to think alike as it renews its ranks.

As reported by The Straits Times, speaking at the Young PAP’s 40th anniversary conference yesterday, he told more than 1,200 activists that diversity of thought is necessary for the party to stay relevant and govern effectively. He said young Singaporeans should “widen the circle” and not feel they must agree with the PAP on every issue before stepping forward to contribute.

Wong noted that Singapore continues to face intense global competition and rising geopolitical tensions, adding that the country cannot afford the kind of polarised politics seen elsewhere. He said the PAP rejects performative outrage and prefers consensus‑building and practical solutions.

He also urged younger Singaporeans not to let cynicism hold them back, saying earlier generations built Singapore by acting even when they did not feel fully ready. Each generation, he added, must bring fresh ideas and energy to keep the country moving forward.

The event marked the launch of the Young PAP Academy, which will offer leadership training, mentorship and workshops for activists. A new YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was also introduced, providing S$5,000 (RM15,762) grants for 40 activists to pilot or expand community projects with guidance from industry mentors and senior party leaders.

Young PAP chair Alvin Tan said the academy would help equip activists with skills needed for grassroots work and community engagement. Former chairmen including Lim Swee Say, Teo Ser Luck, Chan Chun Sing, Vivian Balakrishnan and Janil Puthucheary attended the gathering.
