“The Rip,” starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, is new on Netflix. What are Rotten Tomatoes critics saying about the action crime thriller?

Directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip is new on Netflix on Friday. The official logline for the movie reads, “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.

Produced by Damon and Affleck, The Rip also stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Nestor Carbonell, Lina Esco, Scott Adkins and Kyle Chandler.

As of Friday, The Rip has earned 84% “fresh” critics score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 57 reviews, while audiences have given the film a 73% “fresh” Popcornmeter score on RT based on 100-plus verified user ratings. The RT Critics Consensus and audience summary are still pending.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘The Rip’?

Barry Hertz of the Globe and Mail is among the top critics on RT who give The Rip a fresh rating, albeit with some reservations. Hertz writes in his RT review summary, “A corrupt-cop drama that is mostly aware about its B-minus-movie aspirations, Carnahan’s film is a thoroughly enjoyable if not particularly original mashup of Training Day, Cop Land, Triple 9 and a dozen-plus other films.”

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also points out the limitations of The Rip in his RT review summary, but still gives the film a “fresh” score, writing, “While his new film doesn’t reshape the mold, an ace cast led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and twisty plotting that bristles with paranoia and mistrust make it an entertaining watch.”

David Ehrlich of IndieWire also has reservations about The Rip, but gives the film a “fresh” score on RT, writing, “This movie gets way too high on its own supply by the end, but for the better part of its runtime even the film’s silliest expressions of pathos are grounded by the emotional credibility of the relationship between its two leading men.”

John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal also gives The Rip a “fresh” score on RT, writing, “A sturdily entertaining, hyper-kinetic avalanche of action propelled by equal parts bullets and f-bombs.”

Clarisse Loughrey of the Independent (UK) is the only top critics on RT so far who gives The Rip a “rotten” score, writing, “It’s a character piece that does very little with its characters, since it’s been afflicted with the Netflix curse of dialogue written exclusively for people who are busy scrolling on their phones.”

Rated R, The Rip is now streaming on Netflix.

Australian regulators ease regulations on stablecoin intermediaries

PANews reported on September 18th that, according to Decrypt, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has granted a regulatory exemption to stablecoin intermediaries, allowing them to distribute cryptocurrencies issued by licensed Australian institutions without having to hold a separate financial services license. The exemption, published Thursday, states that intermediaries distributing stablecoins issued by Australian Financial Services (AFS) licensed issuers no longer need to apply for separate AFS, market, or clearing facility licenses. This measure, effective upon registration of federal legislation, is a significant step forward in addressing Australia's regulatory challenges in the stablecoin market. Blockchain APAC CEO Steve Vallas stated that this move is a temporary transition before broader reforms and is consistent with financial services law. The exemption does not change the determination of whether stablecoins are financial products, but simply "suspends the secondary licensing requirement for distributors of licensed issuers," allowing distribution through licensed channels while maintaining issuer liability and requiring intermediaries to provide product disclosure statements to ensure transparency.
