Kenya has launched an Instant Fines Traffic Management System that automatically issues traffic violation notices to motorists via SMS.
The disclosure was made by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Monday via its X account. The development is part of Kenya’s move to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the enforcement of its traffic regulations.
The authority noted that the platform is now live and will send traffic offence notifications directly to drivers via SMS where applicable.
Providing more context, it explained that the system is automated, paving the way for allowing the platform to operate with accountability in traffic enforcement.
The development comes days after President Ruto called for a regulated transport system in Kenya. This followed delays in implementing the system.
President William Ruto
In his address to the National Council on the Administration of Justice, State House, on March 2, 2026, Ruto confronted Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and the new NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa over the slow progress in the rollout of the instant fines system.
“We have taken forever, the Ministry of Transport. Why don’t we enforce the instant fines programme? Why haven’t we rolled out the cameras on our roads?” the Kenyan president inquired.

After his admonition, Ruto directed the NTSA, alongside the Ministry of Transport, to implement the smart traffic camera systems across various major cities starting in March.
The traffic control system automatically identifies traffic violations and issues notifications directly to the offending motorists via SMS. This eliminates the need for manual intervention.
Once a violation is detected, the system generates a fine and sends the details, including the amount payable and reference information, to the registered mobile number of the vehicle owner or driver.
Following the fine invoice, the traffic offender is expected to pay at the nearest KCB Group branch within 7 days from the period. Failure to pay the fine within the stipulated days warrants the incurring of interest on the initial payable fee.
“All fines issued through the system can be paid through the branch network of KCB Group within 7 days. Failure to settle the fine due within the 7-day period will result in the amount due earning interest,” part of the statement reads.
In addition to the strict fine payment system, the vehicle or the driver with a pending fine will not be able to transact on NTSA service platforms until the fine is settled. This means that such a traffic offender will be restricted from activities such as renewing licenses, transferring ownership, or accessing other regulatory services until the fine is fully cleared.
“Motorists are advised to observe all traffic regulations and respond promptly to any official notifications received,” it added, noting that more details on the system will be communicated through the official government channels.
