Gate.io KYC requirements start with KYC1, a government photo ID plus facial recognition, and Gate states that verification must be completed before both depositing and withdrawing, while its three official pages give review times ranging from a few minutes to 48 hours depending on which one you read.

Key takeaways
  • Gate requires KYC before both depositing and withdrawing.
  • KYC1 is a government photo ID plus facial recognition.
  • KYC2 is your address, called optional and required whenever Gate asks.
  • KYC3 is named on one Gate EU page dated 30 January 2023.
  • Three official Gate pages give three review times, from minutes to 48 hours.
  • Gate US asks for a Social Security number under a separate entity.

Does Gate.io Require KYC? Yes, Before You Deposit and Before You Withdraw

Yes, and the requirement covers funding in both directions, because Gate's identity verification FAQ states that users are required to complete KYC before both depositing and withdrawing, with a separate risk-engine path that can demand more.
That second path catches people who thought they were finished.
Gate's risk management mechanism flags some withdrawals with a "KYC Required" status, and its FAQ states that clearing one of those flags requires both KYC1 and KYC2.
So the practical answer is not a single level.
It is KYC1 to move money at all, and KYC2 the moment either your limit or the risk engine says so.

What does Gate ask for at each level?

KYC1 asks for a government photo ID and facial recognition and unlocks deposits and standard withdrawals, KYC2 adds your residential address and raises withdrawal limits, and KYC3 appears only in Gate EU documentation as the top limit band with no published requirements.

The KYC2 wording deserves quoting properly rather than paraphrasing into something harder.
Gate's web verification guide lists address verification as an optional fourth step that increases account privileges and allows higher withdrawal limits.
The same guide then says that in certain cases, such as compliance requirements, limit increases or account security reviews, Gate may require you to complete it.
Optional in name, conditional in practice, and the condition is set by Gate rather than by you.

How long does Gate KYC actually take?

There is no single official answer, because Gate's web verification guide says the automatic review usually finishes within minutes and may take up to one business day, its global KYC FAQ says half an hour to 12 hours, and the Gate EU version of that FAQ says half an hour to 48 hours.

Data verified as of 10 September 2026 against each page in Gate's official help centres.
The gap matters if you are verifying in order to move funds today.
Plan against the slowest figure that applies to your region, and treat the fast one as the pleasant surprise rather than the schedule.
The same caution applies to any third-party guide quoting a single number, since a review time with no page name and no date attached cannot be checked, as we set out in how we verify platform rules.

What documents and photos does Gate accept?

Gate accepts a passport, driver licence or national ID card in your own name, requires uploaded photos larger than 10 KB and no larger than 4 MB in JPG or PNG format, and states that your entered details must match the document exactly, including the document number.
The verification itself runs in three possible ways, which is more than most verification guides document.
You can scan a QR code and complete the document and face steps on your phone, run them directly with a computer camera, or fall back to a gesture photo if facial recognition will not pass.
That third option is the one worth knowing about in advance.
Gate lists the common rejection reasons as blurry or incomplete document photos, entered information that does not match the document, and a failed facial recognition check.
Two of the three are photography problems, and the third is a typing problem.

Which Gate are you actually signing up to?

Gate operates through separate regional entities, so the requirements you meet depend on which one holds your account: the global platform, Gate EU, which is Gate Technology Ltd in Malta holding an MFSA authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider, or Gate US, Inc., which asks for a Social Security number.
The Gate US path is a different process, not a regional variation of the same form.
Its verification guide asks you to accept a data collection consent and a compliance consent, confirm that you are a lawful resident of a US state or territory, confirm that the account is for your own benefit, and then enter details including your SSN.
The Gate US user agreement adds that the company may require a taxpayer identification number, a photograph of your government-issued ID, bank account information and your source of funds.
Gate's own guides close every requirement list with the same caveat, that verification requirements may vary by country or region.
Read the on-screen prompt as the authority and any guide, including this one, as the map.

How do you tell a real Gate verification page from a fake one?

Check that the page sits on a gate.com address, that verification starts inside your already logged-in account rather than on a page asking you to begin from scratch, and treat any tier table published without a source page and a date as unverified.
This search result carries a high number of impostor pages.
Lookalike names hosted on free subdomains are circulating tier tables we could not find on any official Gate page, and pages stuffed with supposed support phone numbers rank alongside the genuine help centre.
Two habits remove almost all of the risk.
No legitimate support agent asks for identity documents over a chat app or by phone, and Gate publishes an official verification search tool for checking whether an account or channel is genuine.

What can you do on Gate without KYC?

Very little that involves money, because Gate's own FAQ requires verification before both depositing and withdrawing, which means an unverified account cannot fund itself or move funds out.
There is no compliant workaround to that, and this page will not pretend otherwise.
The route that genuinely avoids verification is self-custody paired with on-chain trading, and it swaps one set of costs for another.
You take on key management, transaction fees on every action, and no recourse if you send funds to the wrong address.
Peer-to-peer marketplaces are sometimes presented as a way around verification, which misreads how they work, since the platforms we reviewed still apply their own account checks, as we found when we compared P2P marketplaces and their own checks.
If your reason for avoiding verification is that your region makes it difficult, the more useful question is which platforms serve your region at all, which is the subject of our guide to buying crypto by region.

What does MEXC require, and what are the limits?

MEXC publishes two individual verification levels with stated limits: Primary KYC allows 80 BTC of crypto withdrawals per day, Advanced KYC raises that to 200 BTC per day and opens fiat trading at 20,000 USD per day, and crypto deposits are unlimited at both levels.

Data verified as of 10 September 2026 against each platform's official help centre. MEXC figures from the official KYC FAQ, page dated 2 June 2026, and the official support announcement on BTC withdrawal limits.
The structural difference is what each platform publishes rather than what each platform demands.
Gate documents the process thoroughly and keeps the limits off its verification pages, publishing them on a separate regional page instead.
MEXC documents the numbers and attaches them to the level, so the trade is visible before you upload anything.
Work the time cost rather than the fee cost here, because that is what this decision actually spends.
A Gate verification planned against the EEA page means budgeting up to 48 hours, and against the global FAQ up to 12 hours, while MEXC's FAQ puts the normal case within 15 minutes and the slow case at 8 to 24 hours.
On the day you need to move a position, the difference between a 15-minute median and a 48-hour ceiling is the whole decision.
One honest caveat belongs here.
MEXC's FAQ does not publish a blanket rule on whether you can transact without verification, and instead states that not completing verification may affect access to certain services, such as deposits, withdrawals and trading, depending on the regulatory requirements in your region.
That means the answer for your account is the one on your screen, not the one in any article.

Who should verify where?

If you are in the United States, MEXC does not serve you, and Gate operates a separate US entity whose availability depends on your state; if you are in the EEA or the UK, use a platform authorised in your own jurisdiction; elsewhere, the choice comes down to what each platform publishes before you upload documents.
Verify on Gate if you want its stock, options and CFD markets in the same account, or if you are in a region where Gate holds a local authorisation.
Verify on MEXC if you want the withdrawal limit attached to each level published in advance, and a stated review time measured in minutes for the normal case.
Either way, complete verification before you need it rather than during the hour you want to move funds.
For the wider picture on what each platform offers beyond verification, see our review of Gate alternatives and our own MEXC review, and if you are verifying in order to move funds off Gate, the mechanics are in our guide to moving funds off Gate.

The MEXC View

We publish this on a platform that competes with Gate for the same traders, so read the comparison table with that in mind and check both help centres yourself.
Gate deserves credit on two counts.
Its three-path verification, with a gesture photo available when facial recognition will not pass, is more fallback than most exchanges document, and it is the option worth knowing about before you start.
Its answer to the funding question is also refreshingly blunt, and a one-word answer is worth something even when the word is restrictive.
The criticism is narrower and it is about documentation, not policy.
"Three official pages giving three review times is not a small inconsistency when someone is deciding whether to start a transfer today," says Sarah Chen, who compiled the tables on this page.

Availability and regional notes

Verification rules only matter if the platform is available to you, and availability differs by region for both platforms discussed here.
MEXC is listed on the European Securities and Markets Authority register of entities providing crypto-asset services without the required authorisation, following a decision by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets in September 2025.
Readers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom should treat this page as reference information only and use a platform authorised in their own jurisdiction.
MEXC does not serve users in the United States, and readers there should use a platform registered with the relevant United States authorities.
MEXC announced its exit from the Netherlands on 25 August 2026, with an offboarding deadline of 31 October 2026 and final offboarding on 16 November 2026.
