Which Is Cheaper, Claude or ChatGPT? Claude vs ChatGPT Price Compared for 2026
Key Takeaways
- Both companies' main plans cost $20 a month, both sell a $200 plan for heavy users, Claude Ultra and ChatGPT Pro, and Claude also sells Max at $100; the sticker settles little.
- Claude is cheaper over a year because its $20 plan drops to $17 a month on annual billing; ChatGPT Plus is monthly only.
- ChatGPT is cheaper at the entry level with an $8 Go plan that Claude does not have.
- Claude bundles its coding agent into every paid plan and adds $100–$200 of monthly API credits on Max and Ultra; ChatGPT gates Codex by tier, and its Pro-tier pages list no API credit.
- API prices now match at four of five tiers, $10 / $50, $2 / $10, $1 / $5 and $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens; the differences are in caching, long-context rules and the one tier only Anthropic sells ($4 / $20).
- Metering differs, so actual spend depends on whether your work is text, tools, reasoning or code.
A writer, a developer and a small team will each get a different answer to the question in the title, and all three answers are correct.
Both tools charge $20 for their main plan, and both sell a $200 plan for heavy users.
The differences live in annual billing, the entry tier, what each plan bundles, and how each company meters a month of use.
This guide compares the two price lists as published on each company's own pages, then answers the question by use case.
Claude vs ChatGPT Price: How Do the Subscription Tiers Compare?
Both charge $20 a month for the main plan and $200 for a heavy-use plan, Claude Ultra and ChatGPT Pro, and Claude also sells Max at $100.
The gaps are at the ends: ChatGPT has a plan below $20, and Claude's $20 plan drops to $17 a month on annual billing.
| Plan level | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0; ads may appear (US test since February 2026) |
| Entry paid | None | Go, $8 a month; ads may appear |
| Main plan | Pro, $20 monthly or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | Plus, $20 monthly only; no annual option |
| Power tier | Max $100 (5x Pro's usage) or Ultra $200 (10x Pro's weekly usage, formerly Max 20x), monthly only, each with the same amount in monthly API credits | Pro, $200 a month |
| Small team | Team: standard seat $20 annual / $25 monthly, premium $100 / $125; 2–150 seats; pooled API credits up to $500 a month | Business: $20 per seat annual / $25 monthly; minimum 2 users |
| Large organization | Enterprise: $20 per seat per month billed annually, 20-seat minimum, usage billed at API rates | Enterprise: contact sales |
The Claude figures come from Claude's plans page.
The ChatGPT figures come from OpenAI's pages on ChatGPT Pro tiers, ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Go, ads in ChatGPT and business pricing.
The plan-by-plan detail on the Claude side is in Claude pricing for every plan.

Why Do Two Plans at the Same Price Cost Different Amounts?
Because the two companies meter a month differently.
ChatGPT publishes limits feature by feature and tier by tier, with Codex "Limited" on Free and Go and "Expanded" on Plus and Pro; Claude publishes no fixed message count and instead runs a rolling five-hour window plus a weekly limit, as its own pricing page says.
On Claude, the web, desktop and mobile apps and the coding agent share one usage pool, so a heavy coding day uses the same allowance as a heavy writing day.
Hitting a limit also looks different: a Claude user waits, upgrades or buys usage credits at API rates, while a ChatGPT user's limit depends on which feature is being used.
The API credit is the newest asymmetry.
A Max subscriber receives $100 of credit each month, and an Ultra subscriber $200, for the Claude Developer Platform, which cannot be spent in the apps or Claude Code and expires monthly; OpenAI's ChatGPT Pro pages list nothing comparable.
For someone who builds on the API as well as chatting, that credit changes which $200 plan is cheaper, since Ultra carries $200 of it.

Which Is Cheaper for Writing and Everyday Chat?
At $20 a month the plans cost the same.
Over a year they do not: Claude Pro on annual billing is $200 up front, shown as $17 a month, while ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month with no annual option, so twelve months cost $200 against $240.
Anthropic bills the annual Pro plan as $200 up front; OpenAI says it does not support annual billing on Plus.
Below $20, only ChatGPT has a plan.
ChatGPT Go is $8 a month, and ads may appear on Free and Go, with a US test running since February 9, 2026; Claude has no plan between Free and $20, and its pricing page mentions no ads.

Which Is Cheaper for Coding?
Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan, which Anthropic states in its pricing FAQ.
ChatGPT's Codex is "Limited" on Free and Go and "Expanded" on Plus and Pro, per OpenAI's plan pages.
Below $20, only ChatGPT has a paid option, and its coding access there is restricted.
On Claude, coding draws from the same pool as writing, so developers who code all day often end up on a $100 tier.
At $200, ChatGPT Pro meets Claude Ultra, which gives 10x Pro's weekly usage with no five-hour limit for verified accounts; beyond that, Claude's answer to heavy coding is usage credits or pay-as-you-go through the API.
Which Is Cheaper for API and Per-Token Use?
On list price, neither.
The flagships cost the same, the mid tiers match, and the small models match; the one tier without a counterpart is Opus 5.5.
| Tier | Anthropic (input / output per 1M tokens) | OpenAI (input / output per 1M tokens) |
|---|---|---|
| Flagship | Fable 5.1: $10 / $50 | GPT-6 Astra: $10 / $50 |
| Upper mid | Opus 5.5: $4 / $20 | No equivalent tier |
| Mid | Sonnet 5.5: $2 / $10 | GPT-6.1 Sol: $2 / $10 |
| Lower mid | Haiku 4.5: $1 / $5 | GPT-6.1 Terra: $1 / $5 |
| Small | Haiku 5.5: $0.10 / $0.50 (prompts ≤100K tokens) | GPT-6 Luna: $0.10 / $0.50 |
The figures come from Anthropic's API pricing docs and OpenAI's API pricing page.
On list price the two rate cards are now identical at four of the five tiers in the table.
The differences sit in the discounts: Anthropic's cache reads cost 10% of input on most models, 5% on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 and 2.5% on Fable 5.1; OpenAI's cached input is 10% of input on GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Luna and 5% on GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra.
Both halve prices for batch processing.
Anthropic charges the same rate across its full 1-million-token context on Claude 4.6 and later (Haiku 5.5 excepted); check OpenAI's page for long-context terms on each model.

Does the Price Change Outside the United States?
All figures in this guide are US dollar prices from each company's pricing pages.
Local currency and tax can change the figure at checkout, and neither company's main pricing page carries a country-by-country table.
Anthropic publishes no country price list; its Pro plan article says prices appear "in your local currency where supported" on the upgrade page, and the rupee figures reported for India in July 2026 came from press reports rather than an Anthropic page.
OpenAI says Go pricing is localized in some markets.
Check the official page for your region and whether tax is included before you compare; the mechanics are in the guide to Claude's subscription price by country.
Which One Should You Pay For?
A few questions a week: neither.
Both free tiers cover it, and ChatGPT's free tier may show ads.
Light use on a tight budget: ChatGPT Go at $8.
Claude has nothing at that price.
Serious writing or research: Claude Pro on annual billing at $17 a month, after checking the refund terms before committing $200 up front.
Coding: both $20 plans include a coding agent, Claude's without tier restrictions and sharing its usage with everything else you do.
Heavy daily coding pushes Claude users toward Max at $100 or Ultra at $200 and ChatGPT users toward Pro at $200, where Claude's API credit tips the math if you also build on the API.
Building a product: the API, where the model tier, caching and batching set the cost and the subscription price is irrelevant.
Paying for both $20 plans costs $40 a month, or $25 for Claude Pro annual plus ChatGPT Go.
What Do These Prices Tell You About the Two Companies?
That one of them now files with the SEC.
Anthropic filed its public S-1 on October 26, 2026 to list on Nasdaq as ANT; the filing shows $16.3 billion of revenue for the first half of 2026 and a 10% adjusted operating margin, and its summary does not break out consumer subscriptions, which tells you the weight sits with business and API customers.
On November 2, 2026 Anthropic filed Amendment No. 1 (Form S-1/A), adding third-quarter revenue of $16.96 billion, as broken down in Anthropic's Q3 2026 results.
OpenAI has only a confidential draft and, in its own March 2026 post, "$2B in revenue per month" and more than 900 million weekly users.
Neither company's $20 plan has changed price; both have changed what it buys.
The SEC-filed numbers behind Claude's $20 are in whether Anthropic is profitable.
The two companies' listing plans are compared in Anthropic vs OpenAI IPO.
FAQ
Is Claude cheaper than ChatGPT?
At $20 they tie; Claude is cheaper over a year on annual billing ($200 vs $240), ChatGPT is cheaper at the $8 entry tier, and the API rate cards match at four of five tiers.
Does the $20 plan offer annual billing on both sides?
No; Claude Pro offers annual billing at $200 up front, and OpenAI says it does not support annual billing on ChatGPT Plus.
What is the cheapest paid plan from either company?
ChatGPT Go at $8 a month; Claude's cheapest paid plan is Pro at $17 a month billed annually.
Is the coding agent included at the entry paid tier?
On Claude, yes, in every paid plan; on ChatGPT, Codex is limited on Go and expanded only from Plus upward.
What happened to Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3 Opus pricing?
Both models are retired on Anthropic's API (Sonnet 3.5 in October 2025, Opus 3 in January 2026), so their prices no longer apply.
Is there a student discount?
Not on Claude's paid plans, where education pricing is sold to institutions; check OpenAI's current pages for any student offer in your region.
Is it worth paying for both?
Only if you use each for something the other lacks; the combination costs $40 a month at the $20 tiers, or $25 with Claude Pro annual plus ChatGPT Go.
Which is cheaper for API use?
Neither on list price: Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra are both $10 / $50, Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol both $2 / $10, Haiku 4.5 and GPT-6.1 Terra both $1 / $5, Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna both $0.10 / $0.50; caching and long-context rules decide the real bill.
Does the price differ between India and the United States?
For Claude, prices appear in local currency where supported and your billing address sets the tax, so India's 18% GST applies, though Anthropic publishes no rupee price list; OpenAI localizes Go pricing in some markets.
Conclusion
The sticker price is the smallest factor in what you will pay.
Annual billing, the bundled tools, the API credit and the way each company meters a month matter more than the $20 that both of them charge.
In 2026 the two companies converged on the sticker and diverged on the bundle: the same $20, the same $200, the same per-token prices, and a different answer to what comes with them.
Check the company's own pricing page before you subscribe, because both change the bundle more often than the price.
