AUSTRALIA has emphasized its deeper engagement with the Philippines in the areas of economy, cybersecurity, and defense, while promoting the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC) as a key platform for investment and regional connectivity.

In his speech at the General Membership Meeting of the Makati Business Club on Thursday, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Marc Innes-Brown said the Philippines remains an important strategic partner of Australia in the Indo-Pacific.

“For Australia, the Philippines is an increasingly important strategic partner. We face shared and growing geostrategic challenges, but also enormous economic opportunities. In short, the Philippines is a key priority for Australia,” Mr. Brown said.

The ambassador highlighted the LEC as part of Australia’s broader push to deepen economic engagement in Southeast Asia, focusing on infrastructure development, investment flows, and improved business and supply chain connectivity in Luzon.

At the same time, Mr. Brown also highlighted the expanding presence of Australian businesses in the Philippines, as well as the goal of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 to deepen economic integration in the region.

“Our economic future is intrinsically linked to Southeast Asia,” he said.

At the same event, Mr. Brown said Australia sees opportunities in infrastructure, manufacturing, and initiatives aimed at improving the ease of doing business.

He also mentioned a visit to Subic Bay in connection with a large logistics project with interest from Australia, Japan, and the United States, as well as the expansion of investments in Clark including battery manufacturing.

On cybersecurity, Mr. Brown announced that this is one of the fastest expanded areas of cooperation between the two countries.

According to him, Australia is actively assisting in strengthening the cybersecurity capacity of key Philippine agencies, including the Coast Guard, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and Department of Foreign Affairs National Operations Center.

On the issue of defense, he emphasized deeper military cooperation through large-scale joint exercises and interoperability initiatives.

He also added that negotiations for a new Defense Cooperation Arrangement are ongoing and joint activities with other partners in the Indo-Pacific are expected to expand. — Pexcel John Bacon
