SARANGANI, Philippines – These days, evacuees like Mary Jane Origenes, 29, are finding ways to make ends meet in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8.
She has set up a small food stall inside the “tent city” at Barangay Poblacion in Glan, Sarangani. This was after the house where her parents and children lived was destroyed by the quake. Authorities, however, considered the property only “partially damaged” despite their family’s claims.
Since only those whose homes have been classified as “totally damaged” can avail the National Housing Authority’s P30,000-housing assistance, Origenes must make the effort to earn honest money in order to help her family rebuild.
