ZEC Price Surges Above $1,200 as ETF Demand and Short Liquidations Build

The ZEC price pushed above $1,200 during its latest rally, extending a strong run driven by spot ETF inflows, forced buying from short liquidations and improving confidence in the Zcash network.

According to the live ZEC price on MEXC, Zcash traded at approximately $1,190.50 as of September 7 at 09:06 UTC+8. The asset had reached a 24-hour high of $1,254.93 and was up 43.30% over seven days.

Trading interest rose with the price. A supplied MEXC internal snapshot ranked ZEC third by the number of traders over the preceding 24 hours, behind only BTC and ETH. That is significant because the rally is attracting broader participation rather than remaining a small privacy-coin rotation.

However, three different forces are operating at once. ETF inflows are creating a new source of demand, network developments are improving the longer-term story, and derivatives liquidations are making the short-term price move much faster.

ZCSH ETF Inflows Created a New Source of ZEC Demand

The Grayscale Zcash ETF began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH on August 25. Reported net inflows since the listing had reached approximately $34.4 million by September 4.

The ETF matters because it gives investors access to ZEC through a regulated brokerage product. New share creations may translate into demand for the underlying asset, connecting traditional investment flows more directly with the ZEC market.

Still, the ETF should not be treated as the only cause of the rally. The reported inflows are meaningful for an asset with less market depth than Bitcoin, but they remain much smaller than the combined activity across ZEC spot and derivatives markets.

Its larger effect may therefore be psychological. The listing has made Zcash easier to discuss as an institutional asset at the same time that traders are returning to the privacy narrative.

In other words, the ETF supplied both incremental demand and a reason for the market to reprice ZEC more aggressively.

Short Liquidations Turned the Rally Into a Squeeze

The speed of the move cannot be explained by ETF flows alone.

Liquidation data for September 6 showed approximately $4.11 million in ZEC short positions being closed, compared with only about $80,000 in long liquidations. Shorts represented more than 98% of the tracked liquidations for that session.

When a short position is liquidated, the position must be bought back. If several bearish positions are concentrated around similar prices, the first upward move can trigger forced buying, which pushes the price higher and causes another group of shorts to close.

That feedback loop appears to have amplified the ZEC rally.

It also changes the risk facing traders. A short squeeze can produce rapid gains, but liquidation-driven buying is temporary. Once the vulnerable short positions have been cleared, the market needs fresh spot demand to maintain the same momentum.

This is why rising price and rising volume are encouraging but not sufficient on their own. The composition of that volume matters. Spot accumulation is generally more durable than turnover created by highly leveraged traders chasing or fighting a fast move.

Ironwood Repaired a Credibility Problem Rather Than Adding Speed

Zcash activated the Ironwood network upgrade, also known as NU6.3, on July 28 at block height 3,428,143.

The upgrade introduced a new shielded pool and restricted the previous Orchard pool following the discovery of a soundness vulnerability. Funds leaving Orchard must pass through a turnstile designed to prevent withdrawals from exceeding the amount that can be verified.

This makes the integrity of the ZEC supply more independently auditable and addresses a serious source of uncertainty around the network.

Ironwood should not be described as a performance upgrade. The official Zcash documentation states that it did not include performance improvements. Its market value comes from restoring confidence in the security and verifiability of shielded ZEC, not from increasing transaction speed.

Migration data also showed that a large amount of shielded ZEC had moved into the Ironwood pool. That progress gives investors a measurable way to judge whether the ecosystem is successfully leaving the affected system behind.

Rising Hashrate Supports the Network but Follows the Price

Zcash’s network hashrate reached a reported peak of approximately 27.9 GSol/s on August 28 and remained close to record levels in early September.

A higher hashrate generally means more computing power is competing to secure the proof-of-work network. It can make attacks more expensive and signals that miners currently see value in allocating hardware to Zcash.

Part of this improvement is likely connected to the higher ZEC price. When the dollar value of block rewards rises, mining can become more attractive, encouraging additional machines to join the network.

This relationship works in both directions: a higher price can attract miners, while stronger network security can improve investor confidence. Traders should therefore avoid treating the hashrate increase as a completely independent cause of the rally.

Mining profitability can also change quickly as network difficulty, electricity prices and hardware competition adjust.

The SEC Decision Reduced One Risk, Not Every Regulatory Risk

In January, the Zcash Foundation said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission had concluded a review opened in connection with a 2023 subpoena and did not intend to recommend enforcement action against the organization.

That development removed a specific legal overhang. Combined with the later ZCSH listing, it made the regulatory environment surrounding Zcash appear less hostile than many traders previously assumed.

It was not, however, a general approval of ZEC or privacy coins. Rules affecting private transactions, financial surveillance and access to trading platforms can still change across different jurisdictions.

The market may be pricing a reduction in regulatory risk, but it should not price the complete disappearance of that risk.

The Rally’s Next Test Comes After the Squeeze

MEXC’s view is that ZEC’s move has three layers: ETF inflows provided a new demand channel, Ironwood and the SEC decision improved confidence, and short liquidations accelerated the final price move.

This distinction matters for what happens next. The squeeze explains why ZEC moved so quickly, but it cannot support the price indefinitely. The more durable test is whether ETF creations and spot participation remain strong after forced short covering slows.

Traders should watch daily ZCSH flows, spot trading activity, open interest and the balance between long and short liquidations. A continued rise supported by spot demand would be healthier than another sharp move dominated by leverage.

The clearest warning signal would be falling spot activity alongside persistently high derivatives exposure. That combination could leave ZEC vulnerable to a rapid reversal if the market stops attracting new buyers.

FAQ

Why is the ZEC price rising?

ZEC is benefiting from reported ZCSH ETF inflows, renewed interest in privacy assets, the Ironwood security upgrade and a major short squeeze. These factors are connected, but no single catalyst explains the entire move.

Did ZEC reach $1,200?

Yes. MEXC data showed a 24-hour high above $1,250 on September 7, although the live price had moved back toward $1,190 when checked. Prices can change rapidly.

Are ZCSH inflows directly buying ZEC?

New ETF share creations can require exposure to the underlying ZEC held by the fund. However, the fund previously existed as a trust, so total assets should not be treated as entirely new demand. Net creations after the ETF listing are the more useful figure.

Can the ZEC rally continue after the short squeeze?

It can continue if ETF inflows, spot demand and broader participation remain strong. If volume falls after short liquidations slow, the rally may lose one of its main short-term accelerators.

Did Ironwood make Zcash transactions faster?

No. Ironwood focused on shielded-pool security and supply verification. The official upgrade page states that it did not include performance improvements.

Risk Warning

ZEC has experienced a rapid price increase alongside heavy derivatives activity. Short squeezes can reverse once forced buying ends, while privacy-focused assets remain exposed to regulatory and platform-access risks. ETF inflows, mining conditions and network activity can also change quickly. Traders should avoid treating recent momentum as a guarantee of further gains and should consider liquidity and leverage risk before entering a position.
