Ghislaine Maxwell Will Plead The 5th Amendment At Upcoming Deposition

Topline

Convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell will stay silent and invoke her Fifth Amendment rights during her deposition with the House Oversight Committee next month, according to a Wednesday letter to the committee in which her attorneys argued her testimony would amount to “political theater.”

Maxwell’s deposition is scheduled for Feb. 9.

Key Facts

Comer announced Wednesday the oversight committee will depose Maxwell on Feb. 9. through a virtual testimony.

In a letter sent to House Oversight Committee chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., Maxwell’s attorneys said their client, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence, will invoke her Fifth Amendment rights and refuse to answer questions.

The attorneys said the decision for Maxwell to plead the Fifth is not a “negotiating position or tactical choice,” but a “legal necessity” as she is currently trying to overturn her convictions.

The attorneys said Maxwell’s deposition would be “political theater” and would not advance the committee’s mission unless she was granted clemency—in that case, “she would be willing—and eager—to testify openly and honestly.”

Tangent

The Oversight Committee has a contempt vote slated Wednesday against former President Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who have both refused to publicly testify on Epstein. Comer rejected an offer from the Clintons to speak with the former president in a private meeting that would have had no official transcript recorded. Comer called the proposal an “untenable offer.”

Key Background

Maxwell was sentenced to prison in 2022 on five counts including sex trafficking of minors. She has denied wrongdoing and appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn her convictions. That appeal was denied in October, leading her to file a new motion with a federal court to vacate her convictions, arguing juror misconduct and prosecutorial misconduct from the government denied her right to a fair trial. The Oversight Committee subpoenaed Maxwell in July, but Maxwell’s team wanted the deposition delayed until her Supreme Court appeal was heard. The delay was granted.

Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC

The post Franklin Templeton CEO Dismisses 50bps Rate Cut Ahead FOMC appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson has weighed in on whether the Federal Reserve should make a 25 basis points (bps) Fed rate cut or 50 bps cut. This comes ahead of the Fed decision today at today’s FOMC meeting, with the market pricing in a 25 bps cut. Bitcoin and the broader crypto market are currently trading flat ahead of the rate cut decision. Franklin Templeton CEO Weighs In On Potential FOMC Decision In a CNBC interview, Jenny Johnson said that she expects the Fed to make a 25 bps cut today instead of a 50 bps cut. She acknowledged the jobs data, which suggested that the labor market is weakening. However, she noted that this data is backward-looking, indicating that it doesn’t show the current state of the economy. She alluded to the wage growth, which she remarked is an indication of a robust labor market. She added that retail sales are up and that consumers are still spending, despite inflation being sticky at 3%, which makes a case for why the FOMC should opt against a 50-basis-point Fed rate cut. In line with this, the Franklin Templeton CEO said that she would go with a 25 bps rate cut if she were Jerome Powell. She remarked that the Fed still has the October and December FOMC meetings to make further cuts if the incoming data warrants it. Johnson also asserted that the data show a robust economy. However, she noted that there can’t be an argument for no Fed rate cut since Powell already signaled at Jackson Hole that they were likely to lower interest rates at this meeting due to concerns over a weakening labor market. Notably, her comment comes as experts argue for both sides on why the Fed should make a 25 bps cut or…
