  • Binance Pay can now be used for cryptocurrency payments at 650,000+ Scan To Pay merchants in South Africa.
  • Users can spend over 100 different cryptocurrencies, with instant settlement and no gas fees.
  • The partnership facilitates practical uses of cryptocurrency through connection with local payment platforms.

Binance Pay and Scan To Pay have joined forces in a bid to boost the use of crypto spending in real-life scenarios in the country. With this move, it is possible to make payments with cryptocurrency to over 650,000 Scan To Pay merchants across the country. This move enlarges the footprint of Binance Pay by a large margin in the country, where there are over 20 million businesses globally using their merchant network.

The partnership enables the partnership with payment solutions that South Africans are already familiar with every day. Binance Pay now allows users to spend digital assets hassle-free, including extra charges, with the partnership with Scan To Pay, a system using QR code technology. This approach aligns with broader industry trends highlighted in recent crypto adoption developments and growing interest in real-world crypto payments.

Every day spending gets a crypto upgrade

With this rollout, Binance Pay users can spend more than 100 cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins, across a wide range of merchants. Payments settle instantly, and users avoid gas fees entirely, making crypto more practical for routine purchases rather than just long-term holding.

Fuel purchases mark one of the most visible use cases. Engen, one of South Africa’s largest fuel station operators with over 1,000 outlets, participates in the Scan To Pay network. Drivers can now use Binance Pay at supported locations to fill up their tanks using crypto.

Health and beauty spending also joins the list. Clicks, the country’s leading pharmacy and personal care retailer, operates more than 990 stores and 780 in-store pharmacies. Customers can pay for essentials using crypto wherever Scan To Pay appears at checkout.

Fashion, utilities, and telecom payments included

The partnership is not limited to fuel and retail essentials; rather, the Scan To Pay partners include a wide array of fashion and lifestyle brands such as Birkenstock South Africa, Cotton On, Crocs South Africa, Chanel, and Under Armour South Africa. This highlights the evolution of crypto payments further into day-to-day shopping scenarios.

Utility and service payments also form a key part of the integration. Binance Pay now supports electricity and municipal-related bill payments through EasyPay, using the same QR-based flow. Users can manage recurring expenses without converting crypto to fiat first.

Telecom payments round out the offering. With Scan To Pay’s merchant coverage, Binance Pay users can pay Vodacom bills and handle mobile top-ups using digital assets. Even parking fees at shopping centers now fall within reach, allowing crypto to cover small, frequent transactions.

How Binance Pay works with Scan To Pay

The process of using Binance Pay on Scan To Pay merchants involves fewer steps. Using the Binance app, users open the Scan QR Code to Pay feature, scan the merchant’s QR code, select their preferred cryptocurrency from a choice of more than 100 options, and confirm. This system allows for instant transactions with transparent settlement.

This is reminiscent of the existing internationally recognized modes of QR payment systems prevalent in various countries of the world, as discussed by the World Bank for implementing the financial inclusion strategies of the country by the Bank for International Settlements.

Why this partnership matters

Through its partnership with Money Badger, operated by the Scan To Pay system, the Binance Pay service establishes a sense of grounding in the crypto space as users do not need to learn any different systems to use their services.

This is also because of the change in the overall role of crypto, with crypto increasingly being used for spending, as opposed to speculative use alone. This is due to the increasing merchant coverage with easier settlements.

Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who is leading a separate effort to force the Justice Department to release more Epstein case materials, voting alongside Democrats. The vote, if successful, would have resulted in the issuing of subpoenas to JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan, Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing and Bank of New York Mellon CEO Robin Vince. The subpoenas would have specifically looked into multiple reports that claimed the four banks flagged $1.5 billion in suspicious transactions linked to Epstein. The failed effort from Democrats followed an FBI oversight hearing in which agency director Kash Patel misleadingly claimed the FBI cannot release many of the files it has on Epstein.
