Trump's Iran ceasefire claim implodes as nation rejects it: 'False and baseless'

President Donald Trump took to social media Wednesday morning to claim that Iran had “just asked the United States for a ceasefire” – a claim that was swiftly dismissed hours later by Tehran as “false and baseless,” Reuters reported.

Initiated by the United States in late February, the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has rattled global stability, sent tremors through the world market and sent oil prices soaring. Reportedly, the Trump administration has grown increasingly panicked over the war’s fallout, but has struggled to find a way out of the conflict.

In recent weeks, Trump has claimed that his administration has been engaged in peace negotiations with Iran – claims that Iranian officials have outright denied, leaving the White House furious. Those claims culminated Wednesday with Trump claiming that Iran’s “new regime president” – presumably Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian – had explicitly asked the United States for a ceasefire.

That claim, at least according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, was false.

“Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson said U.S. ⁠President Donald Trump's statement on Iran requesting a ceasefire ⁠was false and baseless, ⁠Iranian state TV ⁠reported ⁠on Wednesday,” Reuters reported.
