Cape Town–Zanzibar flights will gain a new non-stop option from 3 October 2026, when Airlink launches a weekly Saturday service between the two cities.

Airlink will open what it describes as the first-ever non-stop scheduled Cape Town–Zanzibar service in October 2026. The weekly route starts on 3 October 2026 and will allow travellers to fly non-stop from Cape Town to Zanzibar without transiting through Johannesburg. That shift matters for leisure travellers, business flyers, and aviation investors watching Southern and East African links.

A new leisure and business corridor

The service will run once a week on Saturdays from 3 October 2026. Flight 4Z 356 will leave Cape Town at 08:15 and arrive in Zanzibar at 14:30 local time (one hour ahead of South Africa). Flight 4Z 357 will depart Zanzibar at 15:30 local time and reach Cape Town at 20:50.

Airlink will operate the route with its Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, configured with 124 seats in a two-class layout and a 2-2 seating arrangement with no middle seats. According to travel industry reports, passengers can expect complimentary meals and refreshments on board this route.

The new schedule shortens the journey for passengers travelling between the Western Cape and the Tanzanian island. Previously, most scheduled trips from Cape Town to Zanzibar required at least one connection, typically via Johannesburg. As a result, the direct link should appeal to both holidaymakers and corporate travellers.

Zanzibar has built a stronger profile in recent years. Its white-sand beaches, spice heritage, and Stone Town keep it high on the East African leisure map. Meanwhile, its wider appeal has also attracted investors and developers linked to tourism growth.

Why the route matters for regional markets

Airlink’s move fits a wider strategy. The airline has been growing its network across Southern and East Africa. However, this route stands out because it creates a direct bridge between two markets with different demand drivers.

For tourism operators, the route improves access and may support package sales. It also makes Cape Town more visible as a departure point for East African leisure traffic. Meanwhile, Zanzibar gains a direct feed from a major South African city, which could deepen visitor flows beyond traditional Johannesburg connections.

For hotel developers and hospitality owners, the route is a positive signal. Direct air access often supports occupancy and yield in leisure markets. It also helps destination planners target higher-value travellers who prefer shorter itineraries.

For aviation investors, the aircraft choice is also notable. The E195-E2 is positioned for efficiency on thinner regional routes. Its use here suggests Airlink sees enough demand to justify a premium leisure service without the scale of a trunk route.

Airlink has said that passengers already holding Airlink tickets for Cape Town–Johannesburg–Zanzibar itineraries will be able to switch to the new non-stop flight at no extra charge, provided they remain in the same cabin class. Airlink has indicated that travellers holding eligible Airlink tickets for Cape Town–Johannesburg–Zanzibar itineraries may switch to the new non-stop flight at no extra charge, but it has not publicly specified the exact process for making these changes.

The key watchpoint now is load factor on the first departures. If demand holds, Airlink could strengthen Cape Town’s role as a regional outbound hub and open the door to more non-stop leisure routes.
