MultiversX is powered by adaptive state sharding, a design that divides both network state and transaction execution into multiple shards so work can be handled concurrently. Rather than keeping sharding parameters fixed, the protocol can automatically change the number and size of shards in response to network load, increasing capacity when activity rises and scaling down when demand eases. Security is provided through a secure Proof of Stake model in which participants with larger token holdings and stronger validator histories have improved odds, while validator selection still occurs randomly every few seconds to maintain fairness. The architecture also uses shard redundancy, meaning important data is duplicated across shards as a resilience and backup measure. Following recent technical enhancements, the network can handle over 100,000 transactions per second, operates with a 6-second block time, and offers instant finality.

The native token on MultiversX is eGold (EGLD). EGLD is required to pay network fees, run smart contracts, and participate in securing the chain. Security participation is enabled through staking, where users lock EGLD; selection to validate transactions and earn rewards depends on both the amount staked and the validator’s performance record. The incentive structure is built to reward positive contribution while deterring harmful actions through penalties that can remove part of a participant’s staked tokens. As of 2023, MultiversX maintains a maximum supply cap of 31.4 million EGLD. The monetary model also includes annual inflation that decreases each year through a deflationary mechanism.
