Curve (CRV) Tokenomika

The Curve DAO Token (CRV) is the native ERC-20 governance and utility token for the Curve Finance protocol. Launched on August 13, 2020, it is designed to incentivize liquidity providers and facilitate decentralized governance through a unique vote-escrow (ve) model.

Issuance Mechanism

The issuance of CRV is governed by a decentralized process controlled by the Curve DAO. The protocol utilizes a Token Minter smart contract, which is itself controlled by a Gauge Controller.

• Minting Control: The Curve DAO manages the minting of additional tokens through successful on-chain votes. These votes make contract calls via the "Voting Ownership" smart contract to the "Ownership Agent," which then executes the minting instructions.
• Supply Cap: The maximum token supply is approximately 3,030,000,000 CRV.
• Current Supply Status: As of late 2023, the total supply was approximately 2,020,000,000 CRV.
• Distribution Channels: New tokens are primarily issued as rewards to liquidity providers who contribute to the protocol's various liquidity gauges.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial allocation of the 3.03 billion maximum supply was divided among several stakeholder groups to balance team incentives, investor returns, and community growth.

Within the "Shareholders" and "Team" categories, specific distributions included approximately 801 million CRV (26.44%) for the Core Team and 108.1 million CRV (3.57%) for Investors.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The CRV token serves three primary functions within the ecosystem: Voting, Staking, and Boosting. All three functions require users to lock their CRV to receive veCRV (vote-escrowed CRV).

• Governance (Voting): veCRV holders govern the protocol, including setting parameters for liquidity pools and determining the "gauge weights" that dictate where future CRV emissions are directed. A minimum of 2,500 veCRV is required to create an on-chain proposal.
• Value Accrual (Staking): By locking CRV for veCRV, users become eligible to receive a portion of the protocol's trading fees. Currently, 50% of all trading fees generated by the protocol are distributed to veCRV holders in the form of 3CRV (a liquidity pool token representing USDC, DAI, and USDT).
• Yield Enhancement (Boosting): Liquidity providers who also hold veCRV can "boost" their CRV rewards on their provided liquidity. This mechanism allows users to earn up to 2.5x the base reward rate.

Locking Mechanism

Curve pioneered the Vote-Escrow (ve) model, which weights a user's influence based on both the quantity of tokens and the duration for which they are committed.

• Locking Requirements: Only ERC-20 CRV on the Ethereum mainnet can be locked for veCRV. While CRV exists on other chains, it must be bridged back to Ethereum for governance purposes.
• Time-Weighting: The amount of veCRV received is proportional to the lock time. The formula for voting weight is $w = a \times (t_l / t_{max})$, where $a$ is the token amount, $t_l$ is the selected lock time, and $t_{max}$ is 4 years.
• Duration Limits: The minimum lock time is one week, and the maximum is four years.
• Weight Decay: The voting power and weight of veCRV gradually decrease as the remaining lock time approaches zero. To maintain maximum voting power and rewards, users must periodically extend their lock.

Unlocking Time and Vesting

The tokens allocated to the founding team and early investors were subject to specific linear vesting schedules to ensure long-term alignment.

• Core Team: Subject to a four-year linear vesting schedule that commenced on August 13, 2020.
• Investors: Subject to a two-year linear vesting schedule that commenced on August 13, 2020.
• Employees: Subject to a two-year linear vesting schedule that commenced on August 13, 2020.
• Liquidity Providers: Funds provided to liquidity pools can generally be withdrawn at any time; however, CRV tokens locked in the VotingEscrow cannot be moved or traded until the selected lock duration (up to 4 years) has expired.

As of late 2022, data indicated that approximately 53.8% of the circulating CRV supply was locked in the ve-system, with an average lock duration of 3.56 years, highlighting a high level of long-term commitment from the community.
